If you’re a lifelong learner, you’ll love the Elmhurst Art Museum. This popular museum is about a 30-minute drive from HighPoint Community Apartments. It features a wide selection of exhibits and fun educational programs. What’s more, it’s also the site of a rare single-family home designed by famed architect Mies van der Rohe.
Highlights at Elmhurst Art Museum include:
The McCormick House
This historic single-family house dates back to the early 1950s. It is one of only three homes that Mies van der Rohe designed in the United States. Rohe created the home for Robert Hall McCormick III and his wife, the poet Isabella Gardner. Both were members of Chicago’s most prominent families. As one of the most renowned architects of the twentieth century, Rohe popularized the concept of “less is more.” In its time, the McCormick House was a prototype for a proposed group of affordable, cutting-edge modular homes in the western Chicago suburbs.
Exhibits at Elmhurst Art Museum
Assaf Evron & Claudia Weber (Now – April 14)
Thrill to unique exhibitions by artists Assaf Evron and Claudia Weber at the McCormick House! Israeli-born Evron’s thought-provoking works will undoubtedly provide food for thought. By and large, his work at the McCormick House derives from van der Rohe’s practice of connecting architectural elements to immigration ideas. Meanwhile, German-born Weber will reside in the home for the duration of the exhibition. She’ll be on hand to interact with visitors, alternate exhibits, and showcase works by Olivia Block and Kate Park.
The Whole World a Bauhaus (Now – April 10)
The Whole World a Bauhaus is a fascinating traveling exhibit that celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus school. Although this German art school was only in operation for fourteen years, its reputation for revolutionizing the parameters of art, craft, and technology is legendary. Displays feature unique pieces that pay homage to the spirit of the Bauhaus.
