Would you like to enjoy a centuries-old tradition this winter? If so, strap on some snowshoes and prepare to go snowshoeing in Will County. Plan on exploring scenic trails with your family and friends as you acclimate to the cooler temperatures. With snowshoeing, you get to enjoy fresh air, exercise, and socializing all at once.

Old Plank Road Trail

Once an abandoned railroad, the Old Plank Road Trail runs 22 miles from Joliet to Chicago Heights. Before the construction of the railroad, the land was slated to be a horse and wagon road made of wood planks. However, the path was never built. Today, Old Plank also connects to the Wauponsee Trail and is part of the American Discovery Trail, which stretches from coast to coast.

Plum Creek Greenway Trail

Plum Creek offers a scenic adventure at the Goodenow Grove Greenway Preserve. Crushed limestone paves this loop path and provides a fun, hilly workout for all snowshoeing enthusiasts.

The preserve is also home to diverse habitats such as prairies and wetlands. Visitors can spot an array of wildlife here, and several birdhouses are equipped with “Spy-on-a-Bird” cameras. Other winter activities at Goodenow include ice skating and sledding. You’ll find sledding tubes available for rent at the Plum Creek Nature Center.

Centennial Trail

Meandering along the Des Plaines River, the Centennial Trail travels from Schneider’s Passage northeast to the Cook County line. Snowshoers have the privilege of crossing a historic swing bridge while enjoying a relatively easy path from start to finish.

For added fun, Centennial also connects to the I&M Canal Trail. Take the trail, and you’ll arrive at the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site. The site was an iron manufacturing facility between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Visitors can snowshoe along a short path offering a glimpse into the area’s historic past.

If you don’t have a pair of snowshoes, they’re available for rent at the Plum Creek Nature Center for a small fee.
