If you love spending time outdoors, our apartments in Romeoville offer exceptional outdoor amenities and are close to some of the best attractions. Our community has sand volleyball courts, a heated pool with a large sundeck, wooded walking trails, and more. If you’re looking for even more adventure, you can explore nature preserves near Romeoville. These three locations are located just a short drive away.
Lake Renwick Preserve
There are several access points to Lake Renwick Preserve; Turtle Lake Access is the closest to HighPoint. Here, you’ll be able to go fishing from the bank. You can also use the 3.35 mile Lake Renwick Bikeway. Don’t be fooled by the name — you can walk/jog, inline skate, or cross-country ski on the path, too! If you’re interested in geocaching, there are opportunities available at this location. If you access Lake Renwick via the Copley Nature Park, make sure to bring binoculars to view the plentiful wildlife. The third access point is at the Heron Rookery Nature Preserve. This area is only open to the public mid-August through February from 8 am until sunset; the rest of the year is breeding season and therefore access is limited. Bicycles and dogs are not permitted in this area, but there is a 1.45-mile jogging path.
Serious joggers, bikers, and cross-country skiers are sure to love the Centennial Trail. It’s just a 12-minute drive from HighPoint to entry points at Isle a la Cache and Schneider’s Passage. Here, you can enter the path and go as far as you want. The trail connects to the I&M Canal Trail and Veterans Memorial Trail, or you can continue on into Cook County. The path is flat with scenic views along the Des Plaines River and a trip over a historic swinging bridge.
Prairie Bluff Preserve
Prairie Bluff Preserve is unique because the land it sits on was once part of the Stateville Correctional Center. Now you can bike, walk, run, in-line skate and cross-country ski on over three miles of paved trail. There is a picnic shelter available for rent, as well as plenty of grassy areas where you can put a blanket down. Be sure to pick up some local barbecue to enjoy as part of your picnic! Prairie Bluff Preserve is located less than 10 minutes from our HighPoint apartments, so you can head over any time you need to take a break from the indoors.
You can find out more information about all of the nature preserves near Romeoville on the Forest Preserve District of Will County website. There’s an events calendar (which is usually packed) as well as plenty of interesting videos.
