Nestled in nearby Chicago is a fascinating destination that celebrates American writers and “their influence on our history and culture.” The mission of Chicago’s American Writers Museum is to motivate everyone to discover or rediscover a love of reading. The museum is currently offering plenty of online fun as well as educational resources. Here is some of what you can enjoy from the comfort of our apartments in Romeoville.
The museum’s brand new AWM Podcast welcomes guest writers who pen fiction, nonfiction, television scripts, and more. They share their writing processes to give you a glimpse into the daily life of a writer. You can enjoy over 20 episodes so far. This podcast is perfect for both aspiring writers and people who want to discover how their favorite stories came to life.
Tools of the Trade
A unique virtual exhibit, Tools of the Trade showcases the tools that have helped writers create their works for generations. As you scroll through the exhibition, you’ll learn about ink wells, typewriters, and braille writers, among other tools. Every item on display was used by a famed writer. The collection includes Ernest Hemingway’s typewriter, Helen Keller’s braille writer, and pens belonging to Frederick Douglass.
The museum frequently invites authors to share their books and writing processes. These talks are all available to watch on their YouTube channel. A recent video features Colin Asher as he discusses his biography “Never a Lovely So Real: The Life and Work of Nelson Algren.” Nelson was once the country’s most recognized author before he quit writing fiction and fell into obscurity. Colin brings Nelson’s story to life in a book you don’t want to miss.
