St. Patrick’s Day and Lemont: A Brief History

This annual holiday began way back in 1631 when the church created a day to honor St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. This was long before the holiday’s association with shamrocks, leprechauns, and all things green.

Fast forward about 200 years to 1836 when the Village of Lemont (located about 6 miles from Romeoville) received its first settlers. From 1836 to 1848, unskilled laborers flocked to the area to build the Illinois & Michigan Canal which now flows through the town and connects the Illinois River and Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River. Many of the 3000 villagers who came to Lemont were of Irish descent.
